Expressing Your Personal Power – Controlling Your Inner Critic

created by C. Wilson

One major activity of claiming and standing in your Personal Power is to monitor and control your inner self talk.  These are the types of thoughts we all have that can at times turn into our inner critic.  An example can be when we have a new project or new responsibilities are presented to us.

Many of us may have to monitor and control that inner critic that may create doubts about successfully taking on new projects or responsibilities.  Thoughts such as these can be like inner recordings in our minds that can play on a constant loop.  We have the ability through the thoughts we think to change our inner self talk (inner critic) into empowering thoughts.

  • As written in a previous post Personal Power – it’s Yours to Use – We can begin to consciously work from a sense of power over our thoughts and follow through with our behaviors and actions.
  • Studies and research suggests numerous ways of being aware of changing these involuntarily thoughts from doubts to constructive mental self-talk. Being aware of and changing a perspective can allow some to experience new major or minor beneficial life modifications that many are seeking.

There are several suggestions from research to get past a variety of unproductive thoughts that include –

  • Taking five seconds to breathe and take notice of your current thought – you can continue with the thought or change your thought and imagine a preferable situation or experience.
  • Mentally listing all the reasons why you are going for this goal and why you deserve to accomplish it.  These goals are personal and private in some instances and different for each individual.
  • Many people decide to intentionally indulge in consistent constructive and uplifting self-talk when deciding on doing some things differently and when thinking of pursuing new goals.
  • For many new responsibilities or achieving new goals will assist in experiencing or improving one or more areas of their lives.

Most who consistently exhibit their own power in personal, social and livelihood environments can succeed toward following their goals by habitually monitoring whether the majority of their thoughts apply and relate to the situations and goals they have chosen to experience.
